Hand Warmer
The Idea:
Ever wondered how hand warmers work? Is it magic? Not quite but with only a few materials and easy-to-follow instructions we can make our own hand warmers and learn about exothermic reactions.
Objective:
Create heat through a simple chemical reaction which causes rusting inside the packet once it's exposed to air. The warmer contains iron, vermiculite, graphite, salt and some water. When exposed to air, these things cause the iron to rust at slow rate, and produce heat. It makes learning about exothermic reactions fun and interesting.
